Even before the great debacle that was X-Men Origins, Marvel fans have wanted a Deadpool movie and after the leaked test footage last year Fox finally greenlit a film. With the movie just within our reach we are starting to get a look at the casting and characters.
Alongside Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, it has been confirmed via Twitter and Instagram that T.J. Miller will be playing Weasel and Morena Baccarin will be playing Copycat, Vanessa Carlysle.
How do I feel about this?
This can only be taken as good news! Coupled with the recent positive remarks Reynolds made in an interview with Shortlist, and a mind-blowing test reel, we now have two excellent casting decisions.
Let’s talk T.J. Miller as Weasel. Weasel in the comics is in a sense Deadpool’s sidekick. He provides much-needed arms and ammunition as well as gathers all the information needed for Deadpool’s latest venture. However, due to Deadpool being a certifiable psychopath with a questionable mental state, Weasel is often abused by the anti-hero. This is perfect for T.J. Miller! Is he always in the best movies? No. Is he always the best part of those movies? YES! Everything about this guy is hilarious from his delivery, to his timing, to his overall demeanor he nails it. This comic book duo provides a chance for some choice banter and could be the anchor to this movies comedic tone.
Then there is Morena Baccarin, who I love, as Copycat. The only thing I really know about Copycat is that she is in love with our protagonist which is all I need to know because from Deadpool’s character I can deduce who she is. A Deadpool love interest needs to be two things; strong as hell to weather the storm that is Deadpool, and of course easy on the eyes. If I’ve learned anything from Baccarin’s roles in Firefly and V, it’s that she is the epitome of female strength. And yes she is easy on the eyes… have you seen her?
I rest my case.
We finally get a look at Sony’s new picture Pixels.
It looked interesting until Adam Sandler and Kevin James showed up…
He stated that even though he was reluctant to leave, changes in the studio lead him to believe they’re no longer track with the original idea he was working with. Although Tartkovsky is leaving Popeye he is already on to a new project of his own called Can You Imagine?. Popeye was originally being released in 2016.
How do I feel about this?
I’m disappointed but not devastated. Popeye is not a series that resonates with me, I’m not of that generation, so when I heard this movie was coming I didn’t exactly jump for joy. That being said I am a Genndy Tartkovsky fan. Regardless of how you felt about Hotel Transylvania, Tartkovsky is the father of critically acclaimed Samurai Jack, among others, so any project that losses him losses a great talent.
To further the disappointment Sony released test footage of their work with him last year and it came out great. Even though I am not a fan of the show I did find the short clip charming and creative, as well as true to the old source material. At least we still have his new film Can You Imagine? to look forward to.
